an odd lot

We had monthly safety meeting today. The guy who was giving the talk = very boring. Did have some useful information though about potential hazards. The best part - video clips. Nothing like video clips of stuff fuming, smoking, spontaneously igniting, and exploding to wake you up at 830am. The best bit was when he said, "if you want to set a building on fire, you might want to use...Funny in a way b/c in that particular clip there was a delay after the reagents were combined before it exploded. So technically, you'd have time to run away. Chemists-we are an odd lot. I was not the only person who was amused by this.

That does sound pretty hilarious. I'd be laughing covertly right with you.

It was all delivered in the same dry tone as all the other information...it was pretty funny.

oh my god, we had our required safety seminar a few weeks ago. BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME EVER.

"oh my god, after working here for 7 years, I didn't REALIZE we're not supposed to put needles in the garbage!"

whatever. the one useful piece of information I could have actually used...she never covered. what the hell do we we with full sharps containers?

I know! throw them in the garbage!

ESC - there's a huge blue drum in our lab that sharps go into. Needles/syringes have to be put in separate containers, sealed, then put in these large drums along with other sharps. Apparently the needles were flying off the conveyor belt during sorting & injuring people. Yeah - so that's why they started making us put the needles/syringes in separate containers first. Why are they sorting through contaminated sharps waste? beyond my understanding.
